A Monumental Engagement

As a guy, you always want your proposal to be a little more grandiose than your buddies'. Admit it, it's okay! You need to impress your wife-to-be, and that's how it should be.

A few weeks ago, a friend through social media reached out and told me that he was planning to propose to his long-time girlfriend in Washington, DC. He asked me to capture the moment on camera.

His plan was to propose in front of the Reflecting Pool in the shadow of the Washington Monument. Well done sir, well done.

I was completely honored, of course.

I packed up my gear after a long day at work and zipped down to DC. Finding a parking spot near the monuments is always an adventure but an expected part of the process. I grabbed my gear and scurried to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

I kept telling myself, don't say anything stupid to ruin this surprise.

From the moment I met Matt and Amanda, we immediately connected. That always makes the photo shoot more enjoyable when the subjects are comfortable.

The cover plan was to take some photographs of the two around the monuments as Matt's anniversary present to Amanda. Little did she know there was a ring in his pocket.

The happy couple posed for me at many of the scenic areas around the Lincoln Memorial. Take a look at a few of the shots:

After taking portraits for half an hour, knowing Matt's plan I suggested that we saunter down to the Reflecting Pool for a change in setting.

After a minute or so by the water, I took a step back for a wide shot. This was Matt's cue. He glanced over and gave me the slight smirk. It was time.

With his American flag socks showing (this guy is sharp), Matt got down on one knee and took his time asking Amanda to marry him.

Amanda flashed me a glance as to say, "You knew about this!?"

It was so special how the admiring crowd shifted out of the way, leaving only the romantic scene, allowing me to capture one of their forever moments.

Here is my favorite shot from the proposal:

I took a final portrait of the newly engaged couple with Amanda's beautiful ring sparkling in the golden sun.

What an incredible occasion for the happy couple and an amazing opportunity for me to document an evening that I will never forget. Thank you Matt, for giving me the chance to capture this evening for you. Congratulations!
